The word “content” in the job title is misleading. It sounds like a content photographer is just a photographer who shoots a lot. The real difference lies elsewhere: they work from the task the image has to serve, not from the beautiful frame itself.

Below I’ll break down what that means in practice, who needs this kind of specialist, and how to tell them apart from an ordinary photographer.

How a content photographer differs from portrait and event photographers

A portrait photographer solves one problem: making a good portrait. An event photographer documents an occasion. A content photographer handles several jobs at once: the website, social media, product cards, advertising assets and presentations — and the images must not repeat each other or go stale within a month.

Three practical differences follow from this.

Work starts with a brief, not a mood board. Before the shoot, you discuss where the photos will live, in what format, and next to what copy. A good content photographer doesn’t ask “what style do you like” but “what should be on the screen when someone scrolls their feed.”

One shoot produces several formats. A horizontal frame needs a vertical crop for Stories, a square for a product card, and a wide shot for a banner. If the photographer delivers only the original size, the client ends up cropping manually and losing the composition.

Shoots are planned in batches. Content is needed on an ongoing basis, so images are shot in blocks: one shooting day covers several weeks of needs. More on this in the separate article about shooting for social media.

Who needs a content photographer in Moscow

Small and mid-sized businesses without an in-house photographer. A quarterly shoot of your own costs less than ordering one-off sessions each time from a specialist who knows neither your product nor your brand voice.

Experts and founders. A personal brand requires a constant supply of visuals: work in progress, talks, the team, behind the scenes. Without fresh content, an account quickly turns into an archive.

Companies redesigning their website. Stock photos and images “from the internet” erode trust: visitors can tell the difference between a real office and a stock-library picture.

Brands with regular production. When the product changes and the line updates while the content stays from last season, clients notice.

What the deliverable should include

Check that your agreement covers four points:

  1. A shot list. A list of frames agreed before the shoot: not “portraits and details,” but specific scenes and angles.
  2. Crops for each platform. Vertical, square and horizontal as separate files.
  3. Processing for the purpose. Colour correction and retouching brought to a consistent look so the gallery reads as one body of work.
  4. Usage rights. Clearly stated where the photos may be published: website, social media, advertising, out-of-home materials.

How to spot a strong specialist in the first meeting

Ask three questions. The answers tell you more than a portfolio.

  • “Show me a project where one shoot produced several months of content.” If there’s no such case, the person probably shoots one-off sessions.
  • “What do you need from me besides a date and an address?” A strong photographer will name the brief, the shot list, the product, access to the premises and the schedule.
  • “How do you deliver the files?” If the answer is “a link to a drive folder, original size,” you’ll be doing the crops yourself.

What to consider in Moscow

In Moscow, content shoots most often happen in one of three places: an office or production facility, a showroom, or a rented studio. Each comes with its own constraints: light, floor space, parking, access hours. A photographer who knows the venue spends less time on reconnaissance, and the shooting day doesn’t get eaten up by hunting for angles.

If you’re planning a shoot and aren’t sure how much you need, write to me with what your business does, where the photos will be published and how often you post. I’ll tell you how many frames and which formats make sense in your case.

Looking for someone to create your content?

I won’t beat around the bush — you’ve found him. Take a look at my portfolio, and then let’s discuss your shoot.
